AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 19-5-7, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO INCREASE THE SALARY FOR SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS IN CERTAIN COUNTIES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. Section 19-5-7, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

19-5-7. The board of supervisors of (a) any county in this state having a population in excess of two hundred fifty thousand (250,000) according to the 1990 federal census, and an assessed valuation in excess of Three Hundred Million Dollars ($300,000,000.00) as shown by the last completed assessment for taxation, and (b) any county in this state having a population of at least thirty-eight thousand (38,000), according to the latest federal decennial census, having one (1) completely constructed highway bridge and an additional highway bridge at least fifty percent (50%) constructed which cross the Mississippi River resulting in a high volume of vehicular traffic in the county, and which has only one (1) public school district in the county, shall be authorized, in its discretion, to employ school crossing guards.

The board of supervisors of the county described in "(a)" above may pay each of the guards employed by it a monthly amount  * * * to be established by the board of supervisors, and the board of supervisors of the county described in "(b)" above may pay each of the guards employed by it an amount not to exceed Three Hundred Fifty Dollars ($350.00) per month. Any such board may purchase and furnish the school crossing guards with suitable uniforms.

The board of supervisors of any county which employs school crossing guards under the authority of this section shall annually spread upon its official minutes the total number of school crossing guards employed by the county, including the names of and compensation paid to each of such school crossing guards.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after October 1, 1999.
